A Tribute to Assamese Music – Showcasing Evolution of Assamese Music in DVD

Radio Gup Shup celebrated the evolution of recorded Assamese music, honouring and paying tribute to the musical legends of current and yesteryears spanning 7 decades. The mega event organized in Guwahati in 2009 was our way of enabling the people of the 21st century to understand and enhance their knowledge of the Assamese musical journey and the genius of our artistes. Many of the living musical legends of Assam were felicitated- among them was the towering presence of the great son of Assam Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

The event –needless to say, was a thumping success which was participated by 368 performing artistes covering a duration of 8 hours of on stage non-stop performance. So we thought that we should carry on the good work and commemorate the night for posterity- and the result is – A TRIBUTE TO ASSAMESE MUSIC- The Music DVD.

The DVD encapsulates the choicest collection of Assamese songs presented visually with period costumes and choreography by the best in Assam today. In a sense, in the DVD, as with the event, our attempt has been to capture the very essence and flavour of the evolution of Assamese music through the decades since the 30’s. The edited album in the DVD is arranged in chronological order, interspersed with performance of popular contemporary Assamese singers like Dwipen Barua, Mayukh Hazarika, Saswati Phukan, Jitul Sonowal, Raj Konwar, Debojit Saha and Jubin Garg with colourful medleys comprising the hit songs from the 1930s till the end of 1990s.

A Tribute to Assamese Music- The Musical Journey in the DVD contains the most memorable Assamese songs presented visually that we all grew up listening. For those of you who are far away from home- these sounds are sure to strike a nostalgic chord in your hearts
